New from Old: Using Online Self Publishing Services… in Special Collections Libraries

Digitization and online presentation is a popular way to disseminate unique materials found in Special Collection Libraries. However, it is equally important for these unique and often decaying materials to find their way into hardcopy books to provide a much more permanent (or at least long-lasting) record and to provide the researcher or enthusiast a reference copy which can be made available to them both inside or outside of the Special Collections Reading Room. Online book publishing services (such as Blurb) offer opportunities for Special Collection libraries to easily create reference materials that can be used both in the secure reading room, or circulated to the general public. Additionally, the creation of these reference books aid in the promotion, discovery and ultimate use of a collection by way of the bibliographic record found in the library’s online public catalog. This presentation demonstrates a few examples of how this can be achieved.

Online Publishing Forced Back to Pay Model?

NEW YORK ( — We will witness a movement back toward the for-pay online publishing model in 2009 says Ad Age Editor Jonah Bloom. In this commentary looking at the media year ahead, Bloom notes that there are more publishers than online advertisers to support them. And he strongly suggests that newspaper and magazine websites have no choice but to accelerate their diversification beyond advertising revenue if they hope to survive.

Where can I find a good free blogging site?

I don’t really like livejournal or xanga. I already have both of those. I was going to try deadjournal because I read on here that it was really good, but I don’t want to have to pay for it and you have to have an invite code to get in free. Does anybody have an invite code they could give me, or a suggestion on another free blogging website I could try? Any information would be helpful.

Is there a place I can post a story I am writing online and have it read and commented on by others?

I’m looking for a place to post a novel I am writing online and have it read and possibly critiqued by others. It is not fanfiction. Does anyone know a site that does this?

There is certainly a place for your story. Try or go to Here you will find tips to assist you to write a number of disciplines, as well as access to other users stories, poems, essays etc. Publishers have been known to access this site for work to publish. Make sure you have your story presented as well as possible with accurate punctuation, grammer, tense etc. Good luck! rustyR

Is there a mass market publishing company online (how is a print on demand publishing company)?

I want to look into mass market instead of POD and I’m wondering is there a company online that does it? And you can do it right from your computer like Lulu. Thank you.

No there isn’t, unless you want to pay for a lot of copies of the book up front, any self publisher is going to be basically POD. I just read an article yesterday in a local newspaper about a local housewife who mortgaged her house and spent 60 THOUSAND dollars publishing and marketing her own children’s book. A year later, she hasn’t made back one tenth of her money and hasn’t even covered the interest on the mortgage. A mass market situation would leave YOU to promote, sell and distribute the books yourself. It is a black hole, as this lady would tell you.
At least with POD, you don’t have that huge layout of money.

This is my advice for all writers considering vanity publishing – and let’s call it what it truly is – vanity publishing. If you believe in yourself and your book, you owe the two of you (you and the book) at least a year to 18 months trying traditional publishing before you give up and go vanity. The average vanity published book sells 100 copies or less. Don’t you think your work deserves more than that? Spend some time at the library with Literary Marketplace and give the traditional world a try before you give up and enter the black hole of vanity publishing. Pax- C
