After establishing your communication with your audience, the content must also be credible. The blog must have authenticity even though credibility takes a lot of time to build.

The moment you begin publishing your content, which is of high value and useful to the readers, you also start establishing your authority. There will come a time when your readers ask you for advice or seek for your opinion; this is the time when you have achieved some kind of credibility and you must use this to build your reputation as a blogger.

You can also syndicate your news updates. You can do this by subscribing to news services online because they allow you to save time on searching using keywords. This is most useful for bloggers.

Is there a way I can convince her to start blogging?

My mother keeps writing stuff in her diary, and it’s become a passion now. I got to know that she harbored a secret dream of becoming a writer. I told her that she should start blogging, but she says the computer isn’t for her.

Maybe she’s just uncomfortable with putting her life online. There are many blogs where writers are hired to make articles that have nothing to do with themselves. Check that out and show her that she could be a paid writer from her own home. That’s why the computer is so cool.

I have been looking for online English writing Classes. I have found some in US universities but they are ridiculously expensive. So i would like to know if i can find some in the Philippines or somewhere else which does not cost me an arm and a leg.

Why, do people use a self-publishing company?

I did use a real publishing company for my new book. Thank you for your comments about an agent they were very helpful. I will be sending in more stories. I found self-publishing companies ask for to much money. Get real.

You’ll find a lot of people in life who think they have what it takes and will spend money to prove it. Self-publishers love them, cha-ching! Some people and their supporters just won’t accept what they’re told, no matter how harsh the answer. You only have to look at American Idol, particularly those instances where their parents believe their kids have it all. Supporting no matter what, isn’t doing their kids any favors in my opinion, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind and keep it real, or your kids end up pursuing an impossible dream and miss out on something else that not only might make them happy, but that they actually might be good at.

There Has Never Been a Better Time to Self Publish Your Own Books

The sad news for the book publishing industry is that book store sales are down. One of the biggest book publishers have recently reported that their book store sales are down by a whopping 10%! This is all scary news for publishers and most of them have already started evasive action against this down turn in sales.

Some publishing companies have already gone out of business while others have started cutting back on the number of books they publish. And even others have stopped accepting new book manuscripts altogether.

But if you were considering self publishing your own book, don’t be disheartened because all this news of lower book sales is great news for the self published author, or anyone thinking about self publishing.

You see most self published authors never see their books available through book stores, unless customers order it. Some self published authors never expect to see their books sitting on book store shelves and have still become millionaire authors.

The trend in book sales now is that more and more people are buying their books online. Online book stores will happily list self published books on their web sites because they don’t need to stock them so if they don’t make a sale then nothing is lost.

You see most self published books are sold by POD (Print On Demand). This means that unless someone specifically orders a copy of your book – through a book store or an online store – your book isn’t printed.

So self publishing through POD means that you don’t have to keep a huge stock of you books and they can be sold all over the world automatically.

But how many book sales can you get using POD publishing?

Well, that obviously depends of the popularity of your book and how well it’s marketed.

And with all the big publishing companies struggling to make sales now, you may wonder what hope there is for the self published author. And there answer is that there is more hope than ever for the self published author to prosper.

You see the problem with the big publishing houses is that they have so many overheads (stock, premises, staff, transport, etc) that they need to make huge book sales to survive. So if they publish a book they need to feel reasonably confident that they will sell tens of thousands of copies.

Whereas the self published author will be happy with less sales.

If you want to look at it as dollars and cents consider this:

If you self published a book and sold it through online book stores, libraries, etc and you sold only 2,000 copies per year. To a publishing company that would be disastrous. But to the self published author who is earning around $10 or more per book , it is good news, even with so few sales.

And if you wrote several books and sold 2,000 copies or more of each book every year, you’d be earning in excess of $100,000 a year. And remember that selling 2,000 books a year is actually very low sales, and you could easily sell twice that many.

And the more books you write, the more book you can sell. We all have favourite authors and will usually buy all the books they write. So if you could write and publish several books and build up a loyal fan base, then the number of books you could sell is unlimited.

But don’t take my word for it. Self publishing a book costs very little and is easy to do. If you know the steps to publishing a book, know which companies you can use to help you and know how to market your book with minimal effort and outlay, then you could write book after book and feel safe in the knowledge that every one of them will be published.

So take advantage of the of the currently publishing climate and start publishing all your own books.

Can you imagine how great it would be to work at home as a self published author and wave goodbye to the 9-to-5 rat race forever?

For self publishing a book, what are the requirements such as ISBN or copyright things. Are these necessary?

I did not see advices on self book publishing especially on getting the book copyrighted, ISBN? and any other necessary things to do before we go to get a printer. How much money is involved in getting these done. Where to go to get these services other than printer.

ISBNs can be useful as mentioned in the previous two answers, but you do not need to have one. My book is for sale in bookstores and on Amazon with no ISBN

You can obtain the ISBN as mentioned previously or through any number of self-publishing publishers. Someone who is purely a printer will most likely not offer that service.

Before having any final prints done, I suggest, a lot of editing, wait edit with a fresh perspective and repeat. Get a proof to review, even it it costs substantially more before committing to a large print run.

The better self-publishing printers/publishers generally charge $50-100 for ISBN registration, though some include it in their service.

I recommend staying away from the more expensive vanity publishers . Go with a company that focuses on printing at a reasonable cost and if you need it maybe offers a few distribution and ISBN type services.

The Business of Publishing

Congratulations, you’re published! But what exactly does it mean to be “published”? Besides the fact that your work is finally in print and your college alumni has asked to interview you for their newsletter it also means fame and fortune, right? Well, ok, maybe not on the level of J. K. Rowling, but at the very least you can expect a call from Oprah, right? I hate to be the one to break it to you but you’re probably not even on her radar screen. The truth about publishing is really stranger than fiction and the truth is: getting published is only half the battle. The other half is to keep your reality check in balance so it doesn’t bounce.

While publishing is all about creative expression, it’s also about business and it’s those business savvy authors who will succeed in the end. Now you don’t have to be an MBA to be a keen business person, you simply have to understand that the choices you make relative to your books future should be based on strategies that will enhance sales not just drain your pocketbook. So, how do you do this? First, take a long, hard look at your reader.

At Author Marketing Experts, we always create a reader profile for each book we promote. This reader profile will tell us where to find buyers for the books we represent. Taking this first step helps us sort through our choices when it comes to book promotion and make decisions on behalf of our authors that are sound and will help leverage sales. There are times when it’s a waste of resources to do a nationwide radio or TV promotion. In fact, some of our programs don’t include any outreach to broadcast media. Why? Because as alluring as it might seem to appear on the Today Show, what’s the point if your audience doesn’t watch morning TV? You probably don’t need to spend a lot on marketing since most of your sales will come from your speaking engagements (i.e. back of the room sales). On the other hand, if you wrote this book to grow your business or to leverage your credibility then you will probably want to dial yourself into your industry through enhanced media exposure.

For fiction authors this area becomes a little tricky. First, you need to determine your long term goals. By long term we mean: do you want to stay in this business or was this book just “something you wanted to do.” If it’s a hobby, then treat it as such but if this is going to be your career, then you need to keep your message out there on a continual basis, through venues such as author events, talks, signings, print and broadcast media.

Make sure the choices you make, make sense for your book and aren’t just made because you’ve always dreamt of being on Oprah. I’ve known authors lured into inappropriate marketing plans by big, flashy names and promises of stardom, wasting thousands of valuable marketing dollars and heading in a direction that wasn’t right for them. If you’re serious about your work, ready to let go of your muse and face the task at hand with some business savvy, then you’re really ready to get published. Below are some guidelines that will help further your success!

1) Reader profile: create one of these at the beginning of your marketing campaign and keep refining it as you move through the process. Refine and redefine who and where your audience is and how to get to them.

2) Time commitment: determine what you can and can’t reasonably do. If you have a full time job it probably doesn’t make a lot of sense to commit yourself to forty hours of marketing a week unless your boss is on vacation.

3) Investment: how much are you willing to invest in your future? Are you willing to invest money without seeing much in return knowing that you are building a foundation or do you want to see immediate monetary results? Most authors don’t see a return on their investment for a year or more. Are you committed enough to yourself or your project to keep this investment going?

4) Reality check: what’s realistic for the industry you’re in? Are you latching onto a fad or something with more longevity? Are you getting into a brand new market that will require lots of reader education? Or are you trying to go mainstream with a non-mainstream topic? While this is an admirable goal, it can be like swimming upstream.

5) Budget: while we encourage authors to invest in their future, we’ve also seen a number of people go into heavy debt, quit their jobs and even sell their homes just to promote their book. While that kind of dedication is certainly admirable, remember that although you have the potential to make a great deal of money it’s not going to be overnight. The lure here is of course that “If I stick with it, this next sale will make me famous.” Well, maybe or maybe not. If you’ve been plugging away for a while without any significant success get a professional to give you some honest, constructive feedback about your plan, your market, and your book. It might be that a poorly designed cover is the reason you’re not making sales, or a topic that’s fallen off of the public’s radar screen. In the meantime as you’re waiting to hit the big time you’ll still need a place to sleep and Uncle Vinnie’s couch will get old real quick.

6) Burnout: we hear this term often, even to the point of being overused. What we’re really talking about here is author burnout. We’ve found that the average author only markets their book for ninety days. That means ninety days of day and night marketing, radio interviews at 3am and a book signing every weekend. On day ninety-one they are so tired, so discouraged and so broke they quit. You can avoid this by giving yourself realistic goals and a realistic timeframe in which to complete them. There’s nothing in the world like seeing your book in print. If approached realistically, objectively and with sound business sense, it can be one of the most exciting times in your life.
